The standard seats a voice can occupy, with what each one may and may not claim. Access is a
property of position, never of pronoun alone.

May not claim
Participant Ifirst person, in the event
What I sensed, did, chose, feared, and remember — my own interior, spoken from inside
the happening.
Any other mind (guessing only), events beyond my span, anything I have not yet lived
through.
Retrospective Ifirst person, telling after
Both layers: how it felt then and what the teller makes of it now — hindsight is part
of the voice.
The innocence of the younger position. A telling that knows the ending cannot sound
like one that doesn’t.
The addressed yousecond person
The addressee as the voice builds them — instructed, accused, conscripted. A powerful
way to make the reader hold the position.
That you as neutral fact. It is an aimed construction; describe the aim, not
a demographic.
Close thirdhe / she / they + one interior
The one head it sits beside: that character’s thoughts, senses, distortions — from
inside, in that character’s weather.
Other interiors; events outside that head’s reach. Everyone else is surface, and the
seams show if the voice cheats.
Omniscient thirdany head, any time
Cross-minds comparison, hidden motive, distant cause — the whole field, entered at
will.
The right to be read as the author’s own opinion. It is still a thrown voice with a
tone and a habit of selection.
Objective thirdsurfaces only
Speech, action, setting — what a camera and a microphone could register, reported
without verdict.
Any interior state. Motive remains inference, and the text will not confirm it for
you.
Positions shift. When a voice changes where it stands — enters a new head, jumps ahead,
turns to address you — mark the exact line. A maker paid for that shift; your commentary should say what
was bought.
